Legacies of Professor Ilmar Talve
KANSANVÄLINEN SEMINAARI 100 VUOTTA ILMAR TALVEN SYNTYMÄSTÄ
Kansatieteilijä, professori Ilmar Talven syntymän satavuotisjuhlana järjestetään Turun yliopiston kansatieteen oppiaineessa 5.–7.9.2019 kansainvälinen seminaari. Professori Ilmar Talven ura sekä tieteen että taiteen parissa oli merkittävä, mutta hänen panostaan tieteeseen ei juuri ole käsitelty. Seminaarin fokuksessa on Ilmar Talve ja hänen etnologiaan jättämänsä tieteellinen perintö. Hänen tieteellisen työnsä vaikutukset kehittyvät edelleen ja nykyään voimmekin puhua yhteiskunnallisesta kansatieteestä tai etnologiasta.
Kansainvälinen seminaari tarjoaa ainutlaatuisen mahdollisuuden lähestyä ja arvioida Ilmar Talven merkitystä niin aikalaisnäkökulmasta, nykytilanteessa kuin tulevaisuudellekin. Kotimaisen oppihistorian ote laajenee näin Talven Itämeren-alueen matkaan ja kontakteihin, monialaiseen akateemiseen työhön kuin myös kriittiseen pohdintaan tutkimuksen tarkoituksesta, luonteesta ja kehittämisestä.
Keynote-puhujia seminaarissa ovat tutkija Karin Gustafsson (Lundin yliopisto), professori Art Leete (Tarton yliopisto), emeritus professori Pekka Leimu (Turun yliopisto), tutkija Marleen Metslaid (Viron kansallismuseo) sekä vararehtori Hanna Snellman (Helsingin yliopisto).

1. KANSATIEDE KAUPUNGISSA (pj/chair Timo J. Virtanen, )
Työryhmään toivotaan puheenvuoroja niin kaupungin fyysisestä ja kerroksellisesta olemuksesta, asukkaista kuin visuaalisen ja ”mentaalin kaupungin” ulottuvuuksistakin.
2. MAASEUTU JA YMPÄRISTÖETNOLOGIA (pj/chair Maija Lundgren, )
Työryhmään toivotaan puheenvuoroja niin vanhasta, nykyisestä kuin tulevasta maaseudusta.
3. TYÖ JA ARKIELÄMÄ (pj/chair Maija Mäki, )
Työryhmään toivotaan sekä työn käsitteellisiä avauksia että yksityiskohtaisemmin työelämän ja ammattikentän muutoksen pohdintoja.
4. MUSEOT JA ARKISTOT (pj/chair Hanneleena Hieta, )
Työryhmään toivotaan sekä museo- ja arkistolaitoksen yleisen muutoksen pohdintoja että kyseisiä toimijoita koskevia tapaustutkimuksia.
Esitelmäehdotukset pyydetään toimittamaan suoraan työryhmien vetäjille 31.12.2018. mennessä.

The Legacies of Professor Ilmar Talve
AN INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF ILMAR TALVE’S BIRTH
On the occasion of the ethnologist Professor Ilmar Talve’s 100th anniversary, the chair of European Ethnology will arrange an international seminar between the 5th and 7th of September 2019. Professor Ilmar Talve had a remarkable scientific and literary career, but his contribution in the field of science has not extensively been analysed. The focus of this seminar will be on Ilmar Talve and his scientific legacy in European Ethnology. The outcomes of his scientific work are still being discussed and debated and have influenced modern societal ethnology. The international seminar will present a unique opportunity to approach and evaluate Ilmar Talve’s role from the perspectives of his contemporaries, the present-day situation and the future. In addition to Finnish history of science, we can thus open the perspective up to Talve’s journey through the Baltic region and his contacts therein, his multidisciplinary work and a critical analysis of the purpose, character and development of his research.
The keynote speakers are Researcher Karin Gustafsson (Lund University), Professor Art Leete (University of Tartu), Professor emeritus Pekka Leimu (University of Turku), Researcher Marleen Metslaid (Eesti Rahva Muuseum) and Vice-rector Hanna Snellman (University of Helsinki).

1. URBAN ETHNOLOGY (chair Timo J. Virtanen, )
We are looking forward to receiving presentations both on the physical and the layered nature of a city, on a city’s inhabitants and on the dimensions of the visual or ”mental city”.
2. RURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ETHNOLOGY (chair Maija Lundgren, )
We are looking forward to receiving presentations on the older forms, present-day status and future of rural areas.
3. WORK AND EVERYDAY LIFE (chair Maija Mäki, )
We are looking forward to receiving both conceptual openings on the topic and more detailed reflections of the transformation of working life and occupational fields.
4. MUSEUMS AND ARCHIVES (chair Hanneleena Hieta, )
We are looking forward to receiving presentations both on the general transformation of and case studies on museums and archives.

The keynote presentations of the seminar are in English. The workshops will accept presentations in both Finnish and in English.
