Valtiotieteellisen tiedekunnan järjestämässä pohjoismaisten mediahistorioitsijoiden seminaarissa esitellään kaksi erilaista lähestymistapaa mediahistoriaan. Uumajan yliopiston professori Pelle Snickars luennoi, kuinka ajankohtaiset digitaalisen humanismin metodit voivat palvella mediahistoriallista tutkimusta. Hänen puheenvuoroaan kommentoi viestinnäntutkija Salla-Maaria Laaksonen.
Toisen esitelmän pitää Voldan yliopiston professori Henrik G. Bastiansen. Hänen luentonsa käsittelee median roolia kylmässä sodassa etenkin pohjoismaisesta näkökulmasta. Bastiansenin puheenvuoroa kommentoi poliittisen historian professori Kimmo Rentola. Seminaarin avaa valtiotieteellisen tiedekunnan dekaani, viestinnän professori Hannu Nieminen.
Tilaisuudesta vastaa pohjoismainen mediahistorianverkosto, jonka perustava kokous pidetään seminaarin yhteydessä. Verkoston jäsenet edustavat kaikkia pohjoismaita.

Media history as an independent field, if not yet a discipline, that studies various media forms at a particular time or different mediums in relation to each other has nevertheless developed quite recently. In the Nordic countries, it has been an emerging field across the full range of the social sciences and humanities at several Nordic universities in the recent couple of decades. During the recent decade, the field has expanded and developed, both empirically and theoretically opening a diverse and rich media landscape of the past.
This seminar introduces two different approaches of the studies conducted in the field of media history in the Nordic countries. The first one by Professor Pelle Snickars (Humlab at Umeå University) presents how media history studies could make use of the topical methods of digital humanities. Another presentation by Professor Henrik G. Bastiansen (Volda University College) concerns one of the key areas of contemporary history, the Cold War, and the role of media during the era studied from the point of view of Nordic countries.
The seminar is targeted to all who are interested in media history and the ways to approach the role of media in history.
