Debt and Guilt and the History and Future of Europe
The first event marks the launch of a new book: European modernity: a global approach (Bloomsbury 2017), co-authored by historian Bo Stråth and sociologist Peter Wagner.
Speakers: Professor Bo Stråth (University of Helsinki), Professor Peter Wagner (University of Barcelona), Professor Marja Jalava (University of Turku) and Professor Antonis Liakos (University of Athens). The discussion is moderated by Dr Stefan Nygård (University of Helsinki).

The seminar series is organized by the Centre for Nordic Studies at the University of Helsinki as part of a broader research project on The Debt: Historicizing Europe’s Relations with the ‘South’, funded by the HERA-network and involving a consortium social scientists, historians and philosophers from the universities of Barcelona, Frankfurt, Torino, and Helsinki. The seminars explore the complex dynamics of indebtedness and north and south from a variety of regional and disciplinary perspectives. The second event with Étienne Balibar (Paris) and Elettra Stimilli (Pisa) on “The Politics of Debt” will take place on 23 January 2018.
