TT Anna-Riina Hakala: “Bernard of Clairvaux and 12th century sex complementarity”
Abstract: Bernard of Clairvaux’s view of the gender binary has been generally seen as hierarchical to the extent that salvation is envisioned as a definitive purification of connotations of womanhood. Close analysis of Bernard’s collection of letters gives a reason to think that he might have a more complementary view of woman and man than one would find possible based on readings of his sermons. A comparison between Hildegard of Bingen and Bernard brings out new ways of interpreting 12th century texts from a gender historical viewpoint and previously unexplored features of Bernard of Clairvaux’s gendered theology.
