‘Let imagination reign!’ Long-term impacts of the 1968 student revolt

Marraskuussa tulee kuluneeksi 50 vuotta Vanhan ylioppilastalon valtauksesta Helsingissä. Muuallakin maailmalla on tänä vuonna muistettu vuoden 1968 opiskelijaliikettä ja sen mielenosoituksia. ‘Let imagination reign!’ Long-term impacts of the 1968 student revolt -seminaarissa käsitellään vuoden 1968 mielenosoitusten pitkäaikaisvaikutuksia yhteiskunnan eri osa-alueilla sekä kansainvälisestä että Suomen näkökulmasta. Seminaarin teemoja ovat opiskelijaliikkeen vaikutukset yliopiston hallinnon demokratisoimiseen, vuoden 1968 kulttuuriperintö, vasemmiston radikalisoituminen sekä uusien sosiaalisten ja poliittisten liikkeiden, kuten vihreän liikkeen, nousu. Seminaarin pääpuhujina ovat professori Kristin Ross New Yorkin yliopistosta, apulaisprofessori Jens Jungblut Oslon yliopistosta sekä professori Holger Nehring Stirlingin yliopistosta. Seminaarin kieli on englanti.

————————-

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the 1968 worldwide student revolt and the 150th anniversary of the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY), this symposium will focus on the long-term impacts of the 1968 revolts in different fields of society, each time approaching them both from an international perspective and from a Finnish angle. Evidently we will look to the university itself by discussing the possibly long-lasting impact on democratisation and student participation, but we will also study less obvious topics, such as cultural heritage, the radicalisation of the New Left and the development of new social (and political) movements like The Greens.
