Sanan "Suomi" alkuperä?

Vähän pohdintaa sanan "Suomi" alkuperästä. Sen on joskus arveltu liittyvän jotenkin sanaan "suo":

http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suomi

http://www.gedevasen.dk/heruleng.html

There was probably a grain of truth in Ablasius’ ethymology. In 259 AD the first pirate attacks were mentioned when ”Scythians” used the Bosporanian navy. The attacking people were called Borani, but such a people is unknown. Probably this name meant ”people from the north” covering the newly arrived Goths and maybe the Heruls. In the same way they may have called the later attacking Heruls ”Eliouroi” meaning ”people from the swamps”, if they believed the Heruls came from the Maotic swamps – a part of the kingdom of the Bosporani, who provided the Heruls with ships. In this way the Heruls could originally have had another name than ”Eliouroi”. Probably their settlements were in the Cernjachov-culture having outposts as far southeast as the last bend of Dnepr according to the archaeology, but that will not change the fact that they believed their settlements had been at the Meotic Sea, when Jordanes wrote in the 6th century.
Another theoretical possibility are the later Myrgingas in Northern Frisia mentioned in Widsith. Their name may have an etymology similar with the twisted etymology mentioned by Jordanes: Eloi = "The people from the swamps" which in Westgermanic could be Myrings (Swedish "myr" - ON "myrr" - German "moor" - Old-Frisian "mor"), just like the later mentioned "Marings" in Moravia (Chapter 2.2). An origin in Northern Frisia would even explain the spread of the runes - bringing us back to von Friesen's old theory.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finn_%28Frisian%29
Finn, son of Folcwald, was a legendary Frisian lord. He is mentioned in Widsith, in Beowulf, and in the Finnsburg Fragment. There is also a Finn mentioned in Historia Britonum.

Tonavan varrella asui ilmeisesti aikoinaan heimo nimeltään Sciri:

http://www.gedevasen.dk/heruleng.html#C2.1
After the rebellion against the Huns the Heruls formed a kingdom in the lowlands north of the Danube along Morava (March) River covering most of Moravia, Marchfeld (Eastern Weinviertel in Austria and Zahoria in Slovakia). A group of remaining Suebi (Quadi) lived east of the Heruls. The Quadi were mentioned by Tacitus (Annales) as living at the Marus River - a name derived from "Mar" meaning swamps and bogs. This is probably the name ending up in March and Mhren in Germanic language and Morava and Moravia in Slavic. It is interesting to notice that their settlement here too was connected with swamps as told by Jordanes, and it is realistic to assume that the name Marings was a nickname of the Heruls in Central Europe. The name may have been mixed up with the Germanic word for "fameous". The Gepides settled in Dacia, while the Ostrogoths, who did not join the rebellion, settled in Roman territory in Pannonia south of Danube. West of the Heruls the Rugians settled as neighbours to the Roman province Noricum with a center in Krems (2.2.7).

In 468 AD Jordanes mentioned an alliance between the people at the northern bank of the Danube (Suebi, Sarmatians, Sciri, Gepides and Rugi) against the Ostrogoths. He also mentioned a king Alaric in this alliance, whom he forgot to present following his own principle in the text. As we are missing the Heruls in the alliance and as the first known Herulian king also was called Alaric, this unknown Alaric was probably a Herulian king (Schwarcz 2005 and the Slovakian National Museum). The leader of the Sciri, Edica, was probably the father of the later officer of Herulian mercenaries, Odoaker, but his own tribe was totally destroyed by the Goths at the battle of Bolia in 469 AD together with Suebes and Huns.
Lapista tunnetaan väki nimeltään Scritfinni:

http://www.suonttavaara.se/dokument/Kve ... undet.html
......Scritofinnia and that are those who are called Scritfinni i. e. Finlanders, who run up on the ice with wooden shoes, whose cantry from thence may well be called Scritofinnia. And same may be urged for Biarmia against those that will not allow there is any such place.

For first the antient writers making frequent mention of it, as that Author of the History there of, calls it often Biarmaland in the old Gothick or Islandick languge, who also coll the King of it Hereker in Ch.7. and his two Sons, the one Rörik the other Siggeir. Saxo like wise in his 9:e book speaks of a certain King of this place, who reigned in the time Regner King of the Danis, making it border up on Finland, when he says the King of Biarmia, fled forrefuge to Matullus, who then reigned in Finland.

But now gramring there were anciently such names as Biarmia and Scritfinnia, it remains doubtfull still whether they were distikt Countries or no. Allthors exept Johan. and Ol. Magn. seem to make them the same, Procop. Jornand. Paul. Warnfrid and Adam Bremensis speak of Scritfinnia, but none of Biarmia, and the same time: Once in his Preface he names Scritfinnia, leaving out Biarmia, in other places he names Birmia omittring the other; from whence Country called by native writers Birmia by forreign Scritfinnia....

The Sinus Bathnicus or bay of Gandvia next to Helsingia. And more over as the Scritfinni are av People of Finland, which not only their name, but an old Chorographick Table commended by Grotius doth intimate distinguishing the Fenni into the Scritfenni and Redefenni, se tis probable of the Biarmians lities that usally commend Lands for Agriculture.....

http://www.hs.fi/kotimaa/artikkeli/It%C ... 5236286344

3.1. General archaeological changes around 500 AD

In spite of the reservations above, the arrival of the Heruls as referred by Procopius was quite contemporary with a significant change marked by the three archaeological chronologies of Scandinavia defined independently of each other - namely the beginning of Younger Germanic Iron Age in Denmark (from 530 AD), the Vendel Period in Sweden (from 550-570 AD with a period of transition from 520 AD) and the Merovingian Period in Norway (from 550 AD). At the Continent this time was a part of the Merovingian Period.

In Denmark the significant votive gifts ceased in the moors, and both in Denmark and Sweden numerous golden treasures from the previous period were deposited in the dry soil - including destructed cultic objects. This may be the background for the invention of some legends of dragons defending golden treasures (3.1.1). The Danish archaeologist Morten Axboe has recently suggested that some of the Danish hoards were offerings to the gods due to a bad harvest in 536-538, which is the latest date of these hoards (especially the expensive fibulas with bracteats like Kitnaes)[Axboe 2007]. The purpose could also be hiding due to plunderings following the bad harvest, which is supposed to be caused by dust in the air from a volcanic eruption in the Far East. Under all circumstances some of the general changes shall be regarded in connection with the famine caused by this event, which would support a war-like people like the Heruls. I the latest dating of the mounds in Uppland [Ljungkvist 2005] i correct this may even explain such a Herulian take-over in Uppsala.

In the antique period Jutland was a part of the Continent as the sea and the big forests of Sweden were the natural borders among the tribes. Therefore the Romans regarded the far islands like Sealand as belonging to the Scandinavian (Pen)insula Scanza (3.1.2). Jutland and partly Fyen (3.1.3) had for 300 years had a separate culture with large offerings of weapons in the lakes and graves with weapons indicating wars against Germanic tribes from Germany, Norway and Goetaland. These armies were strongly influenced by the Romans and probably combined with the establishing of a new aristocracy of warriors (3.1.4). In the 5th century such offerings are also found in the Swedish borderareas between Goetes and Danes. This significant distinction from the more isolated Sealand (3.1.5) ceased around 500-530 AD when the rich offerings, deposits and graves as mentioned disappeared all over Scandinavia - very few Danish graves are known from the new period except at Bornholm. Nearly all the gold disappeared except gilded silver and the thin gold foil figures (guldgubber) normally found close to the the market places. The richness of a society, however, will not necessarily be revealed by the finds in the ground as a Scandinavian society would never waste the imported metals except due to accidents, hiding for enemies, religious reasons or a special need for a manifestation of power.

Analyzing the general changes we also need to remember that a plague raged Europe just before 550, but many archaeologists doubt it had any impact in Scandinavia as no signs of the black rats spreading the disease are found in the escavations.

The former professor at the University of Stockholm, Aake Hyenstrand, summarized in 1996 these general changes (3.1.6) and asked if there was a connection between the Svear and the Heruls [Hyenstrand 1996](see also Chapter 6.6).

First we will look at the finds in Southern Sweden indicating Eastgermanic connections in the early 5th century. In Soesdala and Fulltofta in the middle of Scania and in Vennebo and Finnestorp in the borderlands between Halland and Western Goetaland equipment for horsemen is found in a context quite similar with the finds in Moravia and the Middle Danube Region called the Cosoveni or Untersiebenbrunn Style [Fabech 1991; Tejral 1997a]. This style belonged to the Huns and their Eastgermanic followers in the campaign of Attila in the first part of the 5th century. The finds are unusual in Northern Europe, but are according to Tejral known at the mouth of the Elbe and at the mouth of the Vistula too. In Vennebo and Finnestorp - being escavated again in 2002-2004 - the finds come from wet or former wet areas covering a longer period of time until 550 AD - also containing Nydam-style [Nordqvist 2007]. The few isolated places indicate that they cannot be a result of general trade but appear to be offerings of weapons from warrior groups like the earlier finds in Jutland. Charlotte Fabech has connected these finds with Eastgermanic horsemen – probably Heruls or maybe Ostrogoths.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fen
The word "fen" is derived from Old English fenn and is considered to have proto-Germanic origins, since it has cognates in Gothic (fani), Old Frisian (fenne), Dutch (veen) and German (Fenn(e),Venn, Vehn, Feen).

Marista pääsemmekin kätevästi vanhaan ystäväämme Tyriin, jota on verrattu roomalaisten Marsiin. Friisiläisten (huom. friisiläiset taas) palkkasoturien on arveltu kaivertaneen Englannin ja Skotlannin välisen Hadrianuksen muurin lähellä nimen Mars Thingsus:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C3%BDr
The Excerptum ex Gallica Historia of Ursberg (ca. 1135) records a dea Ciza a the patron goddess of Augsburg. According to this account, Cisaria was founded by Swabian tribes as a defence against Roman incursions. This Zisa would be the female consort of Ziu, as Dione was of Zeus.

The name of Mars Thingsus (Thincsus) is found in an inscription on an 3rd century altar from the Roman fort and settlement of Vercovicium at Housesteads in Northumberland, thought to have been erected by Frisian mercenaries stationed at Hadrian's Wall. It is interpreted as "Mars of the Thing". [4]

http://www.mankindquarterly.org/samples ... rected.pdf
At first, I calculated the genetic Chi-Square distances of
European populations from the Finns, Saami, the European
average, inhabitants of modern Turkey (Anatolia), Mongols,
and Japanese to determine how these populations are placed
within the genetic landscape of Eurasia (Table 5). These
distances reveal that the Finns are genetically close to their
Germanic-speaking neighbors (the Swedes, Germans, and
Norwegians), the least distant population from the Saami, and
no more distant from the European average than are the Irish
and the Basque. Based on the FST genetic distances presented by
Cavalli-Sforza et al. (1994:270), the Finns are genetically a little
closer to the Belgians (FST= 63), Germans (FST= 77), and
Austrians (FST= 77) than to the Swedes (FST= 82).
This
difference is a result of Cavalli-Sforza et al. (1994) using a
different genetic distance measure and computing distances
using a data set including missing values. As Nei and
Roychoudhury (1993) have pointed out, inter-group distances
can be misleading if the data set from where the distances are
computed includes missing values.

http://www.heorot.dk/beowulf-rede-notes.html
Chambers additionally mentions that '[a]broad, the nearest parallel is to be found in Transsylvania, where there is a Grändels môr among the Saxons of the Senndorf district, near Bistritz [Bistritj]. The Saxons of Transsylvania are supposed to have emigrated from the neighbourhood of the lower Rhine and the Moselle, and there is a Grindelbach in Luxemburg which may possibly be connected with the marsh demon' (pg 308).
However, Lars Hemmingsen (pers. comm.) notes that when he visited Rumania to investigate a local informant told him that Greändels môr was so called because 'the moor used to be full of "Grändelbeer", that is, brambles'. However, Hemmingsen points out the existence of a Serbo-Crotian plague-demon named Krătilj , who also figures in stories in which a hero tears off his arm.
Onkohan tuolla Krătilj-kummajaisella jotain tekemistä hämäläisten Kratti-kummajaisen kanssa?

http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kratti
