Perspektiivikuva Viaporista osoittaa, miten oivallisen linnoituksen luonto oli järjestänyt Helsingin edustalle. Linnoitus on rakennettu kokonaan luonnonkalliolle. Linnoituksen tärkeys paljastui nyt, kun Venäjän vihollisten laivat saapuivat Itämerelle. Helsinki oli kasvanut merkittäväksi kaupungiksi ja Viapori oli muiden saarilinnoitusten kanssa portti Pietariin.

Viaporia vahvistettiin kuumeisesti tuhansien venäläissotilaiden voimin. Vihollinen näyttäytyi jäiden lähdettyä Viaporin edustalla ja sen odotettiin hyökkäävän Helsinkiin. Ennen talvea niin ei käynyt.
