Siirtolaisuus

Rietrikki Polénin Mehiläisessä oli kirjoitus "Siirtoretkistä Pohjois-amerikaan". Siinä selitettiin, miksi yhä suurempi määrä eurooppalaisia oli muuttamassa Amerikkaan. Näitä olivat vapaat uskonnolliset olot, hyvä joskin pinnallinen koululaitos, naisten hyvä asema sekä kaupan, teollisuuden ja maanviljelyksen kehittyneisyys. Suomalaisia muutti Amerikkaan vain satunnaisesti, mutta yhä useammat alkoivat olla tietoisia tästä uudesta mahdollisuudesta levenetää leipää.

Enemmän kuin Amerikkaan oli menijöitä Pietariin. Siellä asui tätä nykyä noin 15.000 suomalaista. Suurimmat ammattiryhmät olivat piiat, ajurit, sekatyömiehet ja käsityöläiset. Monet suomalaiset kultasepät olivat hyvässä maineessa.

Viipurin läänin asukkaat joutuivat heinäkuun alusta alkaen maksamaan passeista Venäjälle saman lisämaksun eli köyhäin ja työhuonemaksun kuin muutkin suomalaiset. Heidät oli vapautettu tästä maksusta 1820.
