Varsinkin Koillis-Suomessa oli hätä jälleen suuri katovuoden takia. Sanomalehdissä julkaistiinkin tiheään avunkeräysilmoituksia nälkäänäkevien auttamiseksi.

Ulkomaalaisen silmin

Pääkaupungissa vieraileva ulkomaalainen sai Suomesta paljon paremman kuvan. Siitä on esimerkkinä Lontoossa julkaistu Henry Normanin teos All the Russias. Travels and Studies in Contemporary European Russia, Finland, Siberia, The Caucasus, and Central Asia.

Suomen kosmopoliittisuudesta kertoi Normanin mielestä maan kaksikielisyys ja rautatievaunuissa olevat ilmoitukset "kaikilla Euroopan sivistyskielillä". Ennen Helsinkiä hän ei koskaan aikaisemmin ollut nähnyt kaupunkia, jossa ei ollut likaa, ei slummeja, eikä röttelöitä. Julkiset rakennukset olivat kauniita ja koko kaupungilla sivistynyt leima.

Utopia

Yhdysvaltalaisen utopistisosialisti Edward Bellamyn suomeksi julkaistu "Vuonna 2000" ("Looking Backward: 2000-1887") oli hyvin suosittu. Sitä oli myyty jo tuhansia kappaleita1
