Toukokuun 26. päivä Vuoksen eteläpuolella olevan Suvanto-järven pinta laski muutamassa tunnissa 7 metriä. Suvantoa ja Laatokkaa erottanut noin 200 metriä leveä maakannas murtui ja vedet virtasivat Laatokkaan.

Tavallisesti vesi virtasi Suvannosta toiseen suuntaan eli Vuokseen. Niiden välissä oli myös kapea kannas ja siinä Kiviniemen koski. Tulvavesi jäi sen taakse ja oli toisinaan 10 metriä Laatokan pintaa korkeammalla. Vahinkojen vuoksi seudun asukkaat olivat jo pitkään esittäneet Suvannon pinnan laskua. Nyt se tapahtui ilman ihmistä. Kun lumi suli nopeasti, Suvannon pinta nousi yli kannaksen ja rikkoi sen. Tulva vei mukanaan maantien ja lukuisia rakennuksia.

Murtumisen onnekas seuraus oli peltomaan lisääntyminen. Suvannon pinnan laskusta tuli 5.000 hehtaaria hedelmällistä vesijättömaata. Samalla saatiin vesiyhteys Laatokkaan, mutta yhteys Vuokseen kuivui.1
