Sain Kansalliskirjastosta kokoomateoksen
Finland in World War II.
"He therefore could not take the Finnish neutrality seriously, nor place any trust in country's parliamentary democracy, which according to the communist ideology was a passive tool for capitalist and fascist interests. And even if Finland had been able to stay aloof of the great power conflict, this would not have been in the long-term interests of the Soviet leader. In the autumn of 1939 Stalin aimed for the restoration or, if possible, an enlargement of the imperial Russian borderlines of 1914." (Kappaleen lähteenä on Polvisen Paasikivi-elämäkerran osa 3, s. 3-63.)
"The Finnish government could certainly have chosen a softer line in the negotations, which would have made the Winter War avoidable. But this would presumably have resulted in Finland, exactly as with the Baltic states in 1939-40, gradually losing control over its territory and thereafter being totally overtaken by the Soviet military. Even if the Finnish leadership was unaware of the secret appendix in the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, it understood this danger and let that dictate its holding in the Moscow negotations. In other words, the mutual distrust between the parties was much too deep to be reapaired in the midst of an escalating war between great powers. The Germanophile, Russophobe and anti-communist attitudes (näistä M. on kertonyt laajemmin edellä) in inter-war Finland had self-evidently been constantly cherished by the Soviet-led communist agitation and espionage in the country. Simultaneusly, teh Soviet leadership was unable to see that Finland had developed into a pluralistic society, in which the moderate working class was equally prepared to defend its country and where a strong majority of the population was far more attracted by the Scandinavian and Anglo-American lifestyle than by the fascist solutions."
HElsingin Sanomien omistajana ja päätoimittajana "he instead gave spread to the international voices in favor of Finland, which further strenghtened the domestic 'not-an-invh' attitude towards the Soviet territorial demoands. Mikä sitten johti punaarmeijan suunnitelmiin nopeasta voitosta. Puolan kampanja oli antanut neuvostokenraaleille väöärän kuvan puna-armeijan kapasiteetista.
