Tutkiva pappi

Kemin kirkkoherra Matthias Castrén oli monen muun pappismiehen tapaan innokas luonnontutkija ja käytännön talousmies. Hän laati tutkielman pohjoisen luonnonoloista Calendarium florae et faunae från Kemi för åren 1793-99, joka julkaistiin Suomen Talousseuran toimituksissa. Hän lähetti Talousseuralle myös laajan kertomuksen Kemin pitäjästä, sekä vuonna 1805 muistiinpanot Kemin rovastikunnan seurakunnista. Nämä olivat vastauksia Talouseuran kyselyihin, joita lähetettiin papeille vuodesta 1800 alkaen. Osa kertomuksista julkaistiin.
