Rakennusperinnön suojelun lähtökohtia ovat historialliset ja rakennustaiteelliset arvot. Suojelu- ja korjauspäätösten tueksi tarvitaan kuitenkin yhä enemmän tietoa myös ratkaisujen taloudellisista vaikutuksista. Rakennusperinnön taloudellinen arvottaminen onkin kehittymässä kansainvälisesti tärkeäksi tutkimuskentäksi.
Talouden ja kulttuuriympäristöjen monitahoinen suhde tulee näkyväksi mm. maankäytön suunnittelussa ja rakennusperinnön käytössä ja ylläpidossa kiinteistöinä. Kulttuuriympäristöillä on lisäksi taloudellinen merkitys mm. alueellisena resurssina. Kirjan kuusi artikkelia valottavat rakennusperinnön ja talouden suhdetta eri näkökulmista, yhteisenä tavoitteenaan uudenlaisen tasapainon löytäminen suojelutavoitteiden ja taloudellisten odotusten kesken. Kirjan lopussa esitellään uusia suuntia ja teemoja aiheen tulevalle tutkimukselle.

Built heritage is in an important sense 'priceless', but economic arguments about conservation are of growing interest. The call for transparent decision-making and the fact that conservation increasingly needs to compete for both public and private funds have led to a widening research activity on heritage economics.
In relation to economy, cultural environments can be seen e.g. as subjects in economic planning, as properties in the market, and/or as resources for the livelihood of the whole region. The six articles of the book shed light on the relationship of economics and built heritage from different viewpoints. The articles are looking for new ways to find a balance between conservation objectives and economic expectations. The concluding chapter outlines new potential themes for future research and development in this field.
