Agricola web portal

Agricola – the web portal for the study of history, heritage, and cultures brings together up-to-date information, events, and experts from various disciplines in Finland. Agricola is a publication channel that provides information in the fields of history, heritage, and cultural studies, and raises topical matters for discussion. The aim is to bring together different actors in history and its related fields, and to strengthen communication between the fields. Agricola is maintained by the Finnish Historical Society, which is a national non-profit organization to foster and advocate the academic study of history, founded in 1875. Its key task is to promote historical research and knowledge in Finland.

Agricola is mainly in Finnish, but events and other announcements can also be submitted in Swedish and English. Events and announcements can be found on the notice board and may be posted on the site without registering.

Agricola’s publications include Agricolan Tietosanomat (Agricola News), which publishes news from research fields and from those involved in the site, and Puheenvuoroja historiasta ja kulttuuriperinnöstä (Addresses on History and Cultural Heritage), which publishes articles on topical research and phenomena in the fields, on average once a month. These publications may also publish content in Swedish and English.

Agricola’s literature tracker includes Agricola’s book reviews published between 1997 and 2024, as well as presentations of new books. Agricola’s publication tracker provides a quick overview of the latest scholarly publications and blog texts. The source page provides access to numerous digital source and research materials, as well as services. The publication tracker and the source pages also contain content in English and Swedish.

Agricola showcases research on history, heritage, and cultures as work and ongoing research projects. Agricola also includes an expert bank for the members of the Finnish Historical Society, and the society’s website. Both the research fellows and the annual members of the society can create a profile in the expert bank and a presentation page for the research project in their preferred language.

Agricola includes the Agricola network email list. Events and notifications added to Agricola are forwarded to the list and a newsletter in Finnish is sent once a month. You can send a request to join the email list to toimitus@agricolaverkko.fi.

The Agricola portal was established by the departments of history at the University of Turku. Mikael Agricola (c. 1510–1557) was chosen as the name and emblem because he laid the foundation for Finnish written publicity. The Agricola portal aims to continue this tradition of publishing by promoting free online publishing in the fields of history, heritage, and cultural research.
