Welcome to the first-ever Finnish Transnational and Multilingual Archives Network Online Seminar “Physical and Digital (Research) Materials” on March 19, 2025 at 13:00 – 16:30 EET (Helsinki, Finland, Winter Time) via Zoom!
The seminar gathers researchers and personnel from memory organizations to discuss the challenges of transnational and multilingual archives. Transnational collections can often be fragmented in different countries and therefore digitalization allows for a more comprehensive use of the archival materials. On the other hand, not all material may ever be digitized and digitalization can steer research. Multilingual material can, in turn, pose challenges in identifying, describing and classifying the material.
The objective of this event is to facilitate in-depth conversations and discussions on transnational physical and digitized archival materials. Through an examination of the advantages, difficulties, and constraints linked to both types of archival material, this event will investigate the impact of digitalization on the accessibility and usability of research resources for scholars.

The event is organized by the Finnish Transnational and Multilingual Archives Network (FTMAN). Organizing Committee: Lotta Leiwo (University of Helsinki), Hanna Karhu (University of Helsinki / Finnish Literature Society), Aytac Yurukcu (University of Eastern Finland) and Heini Ylärakkola (University of Turku).
The FTMAN was established during the “Transnational and Multilingual Archives” workshop, held on October 26, 2023, at the Finnish Literature Society and the National Library of Finland in Helsinki. The workshop highlighted the need for archivists, researchers, and other experts working with multilingual and transnational materials to maintain closer contact and explore opportunities for collaboration. The network, which meets a few times a year online, was founded to support these goals.
Anyone interested in these topics is welcome to join. To become an FTMAN member and receive meeting invitations and newsletters, please contact the coordinator, Lotta Leiwo, via email at lotta.leiwo@helsinki.fi.
