13th European Remembrance Symposium & International Conference on the 50th Anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act: The Spirit of Helsinki Then and Now

The European Network Remembrance and Solidarity (ENRS) are delighted to invite you to the 13th European Remembrance Symposium & International Conference on the 50th Anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act: The Spirit of Helsinki Then and Now in collaboration with Historians without Borders (HWB), the University of Helsinki, the Federal Foundation for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Germany, the Leibniz-Institute of European History (IEG), the Religion and Cold War Network (ReCoNet) and the Aue Foundation!

The symposium will be held on 10—13 June 2025 in the Finlandia Hall and at the University of Helsinki. The conference commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act and will ask about its significance for international relations today.

The accompanying international conference will focus on the impact the Helsinki Final Act had on civil society, the efficacy of human rights as well as religious actors and the formation of Helsinki groups across Europe and North America.

Speakers include prominent CSCE/OSCE historians, civil society activists, politicians, museum professionals, human rights defenders, former dissidents, and more:

  • Professor Sarah Snyder – American University
  • Professor Kristina Spohr – The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)
  • Associate Professor Michael Cotey Morgan – University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • Professor Taras Kuzio – National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy
  • Dr. Irina Scherbakowa – Memorial — International Memorial Association
  • Dr. Ville Kivimäki – Research director of the Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura – Finnish Literature Society
  • Taina Máret Pieski – Museum Director, CEO of Sámi Museum Siida

The annual symposium, hosted by the ENRS in partnership with other institutions, aims to promote collaboration among researchers and educators of 20th-century European history. Professionals and organisations will have the opportunity to present their activities and projects and find new European cooperation partners in the Turbo Presentations section. In addition to the panel and workshop programme, participants will have the opportunity to visit sites and museums important to the local history of Helsinki.

Participants are expected to cover their own travel expenses. The language of the conference is English.
