Does your academic work require translating non-English sources into English? Are you a non-native English researcher trying to “make it” in English within academia? Do you sometimes feel lost with translation? If so, this webinar is for you!
As researchers in the humanities, we work in multilingual environments. Many research groups are transnational, with English typically serving as the working language. Consequently, research results are often written in English as academic articles, books, and other publications. Some researchers think and write in their native language and then translate their work into English for publication. We may work with multilingual and/or non-English source materials and data, translating these texts into direct citations for academic publications. Some use non-standard language source materials, such as interviews, oral histories, lyrics, or poetic meter, and struggle to convey the genre, register, and meaning of the texts. Few researchers, however, have formal training in translation, yet we need to determine how to effectively translate texts and best convey the content and tone, as well as our arguments, to the reader. Have we considered how translating affects our research process?
Join the Finnish Transnational and Multilingual Archives Network (FTMAN) Zoom Webinar on September 24, 2025, from 15:00 to 16:00 EEST to learn how translation is an integral part of the research process. Laura Ivaska, PhD, University Lecturer in English at the University of Turku, and Juho Suokas, PhD, University Lecturer in English at the University of Eastern Finland, will present approaches from the perspective of translation studies and provide concrete tools for translating your academic texts ethically and effectively.

What is FTMAN?
The Finnish Transnational and Multilingual Archives Network was established at the “Transnational and Multilingual Archives” workshop held on October 26, 2023, at the Finnish Literature Society and the National Library of Finland in Helsinki. The workshop was organized by the ARNE network (Archive Research Network) and two projects funded by the Kone Foundation: Hanna Karhu’s “The connections between Finnish poetry and the rekilaulu singing culture: forms, meanings and trans-nationalism” and Kirsti Salmi-Niklander’s “T-Bone Slim and the transnational poetics of the migrant left in North America.” The workshop was funded by the Helsinki Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities (HSSH). During the workshop, it was recognized that archivists, researchers, and other experts working with multilingual and transnational materials in various ways should keep in closer contact and continue to explore collaboration opportunities. The network was founded to serve these goals.
The network meets for Zoom coffee sessions about every 3–4 months. During these sessions, discussions are often initiated with presentations on related topics or are more informal opportunities to exchange news and ideas. The network coordinator sends out a newsletter with current information via email a few times a year.
