The theme of the third season (autumn 2025) of ELBOW Talks is ”Electricity and Science”. The season will have four excellent talks around the theme, covered by our very own ELBOW Team and one special guest.
Our ELBOW team member, Doctoral Researcher Edna Huotari (University of Helsinki) will be our first speaker in this season of ELBOW Talks series. She will give us a talk about ”Electric Attraction: Medicine, Sexuality and Electrical Treatments in Sexual Dysfunctions and Sexually Transmitted Diseases at the Turn of the 19th century”.
Abstract:
From electric eels to soirées showcasing the newly found “electric fluid”, electricity stoked the erotic imagination of the 18th and 19th century physicians, writers and charlatans alike. An electrical optimism entered the medical sphere, and electricity as a new treatment was applied to most ailments under the sun. This talk examines the intersections where medicine, electricity and sexuality met. Through case studies of sexual ailments and dysfunctions being treated with electricity, this talk maps out why electricity was so quickly connected to sexuality and what this connection meant to patients, practitioners and theories around the human body and its function at large.
