Forests, society and temporality: Nordic, European and Global Perspectives

Warmly welcome to this panel on forests, society and temporality, either online or on the campus of Åbo Akademi University in Turku, Finland (Auditorium Källan C201, Arken building).

Extractivism, drought and fires are threatening the future of forests. How have forests been exploited and protected historically, and how can we transition from our current era to one of more ecologically balanced use of forests? Do humans and forests operate on different temporalities, and how can these be brought closer together? The panel offers Nordic, European and global perspectives on these pressing issues.

The panellists are:

Martine Chalvet, Associate Professor, History (Aix-Marseille Université, France)
Markus Kröger, Professor of Global Development Studies (University of Helsinki, Finland)
Klara Härgestam, PhD Student, Environmental Rhetorics (Örebro University, Sweden)
Mikko Toivanen, Academy Research Fellow in Global and Environmental History (University of Eastern Finland)
Juha Haavisto, Researcher in Environmental History (University of Turku, Finland)

Moderators: Otso Kortekangas (Åbo Akademi University, Finland) and Christoffer Åhlman (Örebro University, Sweden)

The panel is organised by the project The Manifold Meanings of Forests in Comprehensive Education in the Nordics 1972–2023 and is funded by the Kone Foundation
