Phd-fellowship for 12 months in Philosophy of History and Historiography(including History of Science)

 

The Faculty of Humanities in the University of Oulu in Finland offers one Phd-fellowship for 12 months. The area of specialisation is the philosophy of history and historiography widely conceived.

Context

Philosophy has close ties and co-operates with History of Science and Ideas at the University of Oulu. Philosophy is part of the inter-disciplinary research community ”The Age of Adjustments? Critical and historical perspectives on governing citizens, health and environment (AgeAds),” which received the highest mark 6 (outstanding) in the latest RAE evaluation (http://www.oulu.fi/historyofscienceandideas/node/24760) .

This position will be associated to the forthcoming Oulu Centre for Theoretical and Philosophical Studies of History. The areas of the centre are (1) the philosophy of history and historiography; (2) conceptual studies on the historiography of science and science studies and; (3) the philosophy of science and epistemology with relevance to one or both of the previous subjects.

Duties

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a clear research plan and promise of future publications. The Phd-candidate may be asked to teach, assist in workshop and other event organising and in academic correspondence as well as in maintaining a web site for the Centre. These kinds of teaching and administrative responsibilities take 5-10% of time at maximum.

Length

The PhD-fellowship is for 12-months. While there is no guarantee for further funding after 12 months, the candidate is given full support in attempts to secure further funding from external sources either as an individual applicant or as a member of a research team. There are no university fees in Finland and the student may continue his or her studies in any case.

Eligibility

The candidate may be working on any theme that falls within the three areas of emphasis described above. All candidates with a suitable educational background are eligible. Especially students with a degree or research experience in one or more of the following fields are encouraged to apply: the philosophy of history and historiography, the philosophy of science, the history of science, science studies and the history of ideas.

Salary and start date

The salary will be set on levels 2–4 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities (€1 964-2 452 gross). In addition, supplementary remuneration will be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 46.3% of the salary scale.

The starting date is negotiable. The first possible start date is October 1, 2014, and the job must be taken up by December 1, 2014, at the latest.
