The Ethics and Morals of Sports, the Legitimacy of Sport Congress 2021 in Jyväskylä

The Finnish Society for Sports History, The Finnish Society of Sport Sciences, The Department of History and Ethnology of the University of Jyväskylä and The Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences of the University of Jyväskylä jointly organize The Ethics and Morals of Sports, the Legitimacy of Sport Congress 2021 in the University of Jyväskylä, in Finland, 25st–26th of November, 2021.

We invite researchers and scholars to the Congress to discuss and analyze the problems and downsides associated with sports and exercise. These are, for instance, doping, gender-based harassment, victims of sport, fraudulent means, intoxicants, power of money, violence and hooliganism.

Exercise and sport – in society at large – are very much about values and ideals. One needs to know what one wants and where one wants to go. However, the key question related to the issues of exercise and sports is how to solve these problems.

History is the main field of study in the Congress but we want to approach the thematic multi-scientifically. Along with Historians, we expect that representatives of Ethnology, Physical Education, Museology, Sociology and Media Sciences among others answer our call as we aim at encompassing the congress thematic from past to the future.

The Congress language is English. The speeches are expected to be 20 minutes (+10 minutes for public discussion).

We ask all, who are interested in the theme, to send the abstracts of their presentations (one A4) to Docent Heikki Roiko-Jokela (heikki.roiko-jokela(at)jyu.fi) or Congress Secretary Hanna Jakosuo (hanna.k.jakosuo(at)jyu.fi) by the 31st of August.
