Conference on Emotions, Populism and Polarisation in Politics, Media and Culture

We have the pleasure to invite you to the first Helsinki Conference on emotions, populism and polarisation, called ”Emotions, Populism and Polarised Politics, Media, and Culture”, taking place at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Our conference on Monday and Tuesday 19-20 August with a supplementary day on Wednesday 21 August explores the link between emotions and populism, polarising politics and how they spill over to media and culture. The aim of the conference is to bring together a variety of international researchers at all career stages dealing with a broad range of topics that employ a post-structuralist and/or post-foundational approach to critical inquiry. The conference seeks to address different issues from both theoretical and empirical perspectives, especially those exploring the intersection of different positionalities and challenging bounded national contexts.

Our conference focuses on different cases that explore the link between emotions and populism, as well as discuss polarisation in politics, media, and culture. The conference is organized by two Academy of Finland funded projects, Mainstreaming Populism in the 21st Century (MaPo), and Whirl of Knowledge: Cultural Populism in European Polarised Politics and Societies (WhiKnow). It is also organised in connection with two Helsinki Summer School courses “Rhetoric-Performative and Post-Foundational Analysis” and “Populism on the Loose in Europe and Beyond”, taking place from 6 to 22 August 2019. Both the summer schools and the conference draw on the political philosophy of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, taking forward the discourse theoretical, hegemony-focused Essex school approach. We look forward to discussing issues from all around the world – prospective papers include cases from across Europe, Asia, Latin America etc.

Confirmed keynote speakers can be seen here.

The registration will be open until 3 August 2019. However, in order to get the early-bird fee (50 EUR for students/non-employed and 80 EUR for employed participants), you need to register until 30 June 2019.
