Open lectures from professor Katharine Ellis 12.9.2019

Professor Katharine Ellis from University of Cambridge (UK) will be giving two open lectures on Thursday 12 of September 2019 at the University of the Arts Helsinki History Forum Opera seminar and Thursday Forum.

On Thursday 12 of September at 10 – 12 am (Sibelius Academy, Töölönkatu 28,  T522, 5th floor) professor Ellis` title at the Opera seminar is Thinking Institutionally about the French Opera Industry. Katharine Ellis presents in her topic about the art of the possible (and of the impossible) in the writing of operatic histories of France between the 1830s and the 1930s.

The second guest lecture by professor Ellis will be held in Thursday Forum 12 of September at 1 – 2.30 pm (Musiikkitalo, Mannerheimintie 13 A, meeting room 3101). Katharine Ellis continues with the title Music Criticism as Salon Culture: France in the (Very) Long Nineteenth Century. Through the lens of France, this paper focuses as much on the press itself as on its criticism and its critics, and asks what characterises a local, or regional, musical press in contradistinction to that of the capital.
