This session is organized as part of the Joint Baltic Connections and the Scandinavian Society for Economic and Social History Conference, held on June 10–12, 2026, at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.
The session invites paper proposals addressing women’s work and livelihoods in a broad historical perspective, spanning from the pre-industrial era to the recent past. We welcome contributions that explore women’s economic activities, labour relations, income strategies, and household economies across different regions, sectors, and social contexts.
Possible themes include, but are not limited to, paid and unpaid work, formal and informal labour, household production, wage formation, occupational structures, regional and sectoral variation, life-course perspectives, and methodological approaches to studying women’s work in historical sources. Comparative, transnational, and regionally focused papers are particularly encouraged.
The session connects closely with the conference keynote lecture by Joyce Burnette (Wabash College) and aims to foster discussion on long-term continuities and changes in women’s economic roles. By bringing together scholars working on different periods and regions, the session seeks to highlight the diversity of women’s work experiences and their significance for broader economic and social history.
