The Everyday in the History of Nationhood and Nationalisms Conference, organized by the Research Council of Finland Centre of Excellence in Nationalism Research in the Humanities (NARS), takes place at Tampere University, Finland, May 12-14, 2027. The Call for Proposals is now until 30.10.2026!
The First NARS Conference will examine how the everyday has shaped, negotiated, legitimized, and challenged nationalisms, and continues to do so. How have people produced and contested national meanings in different ways and in their encounters with mundane institutions, practices, spaces and objects? To what extent is the episodic, fluctuating, and asymmetrical nature of nationalism due to everyday encounters of individuals and groups with national(ist) affordances? More fundamentally, what does the “everyday” signify in everyday nationalism, and what influences its changing meanings?

Meet our keynote speakers
We are delighted to announce that our keynote speakers will be Jon Fox (University of Bristol) and Geneviève Zubrzycki (University of Michigan). In his research, Jon Fox has focused on everyday nationalism, trying to understand the significance of nationalism for people in their everyday lives. Geneviève Zubrzycki is a historical and cultural sociologist, who has published widely on nationalism and religion, collective memory, national mythology and the politics of commemoration, and visual culture and materiality.

About the organizer
The Center of Excellence in Nationalism Research in the Humanities (2026–2033), led by the Finnish Literature Society and funded by the Research Council of Finland, examines nationalism as a complex human phenomenon whose content, meanings, and intensity vary over time. We do not approach nationalism so much as a political ideology but rather analyze its practical manifestations and effects on the lives of different groups of people.
