Historia nyt! (History now!) is a series of lectures organized by the Turku Historical Association in collaboration with Turku City Library. On Tuedsay 6 October from 6 pm to 7.30 pm at the lecture hall ”Studio” (Turku City Library), the lecture will be given by PhD student Young Joo Hong with subject ”Depressed Nation: Emotional Culture of South Korea (Cultural history of depression and emotional experiences)”.

Depression in Korea, in cultural-historical terms, did not simply exist to be discovered. It is a historically contingent construct shaped by the combination of medical-cultural language and everyday attempts to explain human feelings. My research focuses on the question of what emotions people experienced, how they gave them voice, and how those emotions came to be named, interpreted, and subsequently redefined within the popular discourses.
