Welcome to join ELBOW Talks, Talk 3 / Season 4!
The theme of the fourth and final season (spring 2026) of ELBOW Talks is ”Healing & Medicine”. The season will have six excellent talks around the theme.
The third session of the season is held by Professor Michael Stolberg
(University of Würzburg, Institut für Geschichte der Medizin). He will give us a talk about ”Female Surgeons and Their Patients in Early Modern Germany”.
Abstract:
This paper will look at a group of unlicensed female practitioners who – virtually ignored by historians – played an important role in surgical care in the early modern German towns. Many patients with common surgical ailments such as sores, fistulas, superficial tumors, and other pathological skin conditions sought their advice. Numerous testimonials attest to their successes, even in cases the male surgeons had abandoned as hopeless. Against the protests of male surgeons, some local town councils officially and granted these women permission to practice or even paid them a regular salary. They accepted that their services were widely appreciated, especially by women with sores and other ailments of the breasts or private parts they did not want to expose to the gaze or touch of male surgeons.
