The theme of the third season (autumn 2025) of ELBOW Talks is ”Electricity and Science”. The season will have four excellent talks around the theme, covered by our very own ELBOW Team and one special guest.
Our ELBOW team member, Postdoctoral Researcher Saara-Maija Kontturi (University of Helsinki) will be our third speaker in this season of ELBOW Talks series. She will give us a talk about ”Medical Electricity and the Scientification of Medicine in Sweden in the 18th Century”.
Abstract:
Although medical electricity was a trendy treatment elsewhere in Europe during the 18th century, Sweden far in the north may come across as a surprising location for the fad. On the other hand, Sweden was actively involved in the scientific development of the Enlightenment era and wanted to be known as “the superpower of science”. The Swedish experimenters of electricity were part of a larger movement in the scientification of medicine and transnational construction of knowledge. This presentation takes a look at the situating of medical electricity and its practitioners in Sweden at the crossroads of medicine, natural philosophy, and the emerging field of physics.
