ELBOW Talks Season 4 / Talk 4 – Patients’ Experiences of TB Medication in the 1950s and 1960s

Welcome to join ELBOW Talks, Talk 4 / Season 4!

Our series of ELBOW Talks is coming to an end, and we warmly welcome you to join our last ELBOW Talk of all ELBOW Talks. The theme of the fourth and final season (spring 2026) of ELBOW Talks is ”Healing & Medicine”.

The fourth session of the final season is held by Associate Professor Heini Hakosalo (University of Oulu). He will give us a talk about ”Materia Medica: Patients’ Experiences of TB Medication in the 1950s and 1960s”.

Abstract:

The introduction of novel chemotherapeutic tuberculosis medication at the turn of the 1940s and 1950s is a well-known and much-celebrated chapter in the history of modern medicine. This paper uses a major collection of autobiographical patient narratives to looks at the step from patients’ point of view. From this vantage point, what we see is a process rather than an event – a painstaking process involving many insecurities, frustrations and disappointments. The paper starts by shortly introducing the novel forms of medication and then moves on to analyse the emotional, sensory and material dimensions of being – or hoping to be – medicated for a life-threatening condition.
