Abstract
”Embodied resistance: Stress as a risk factor in Finnish medical journals Duodecim and Terveydenhoitolehti, c. 1945–1970”
This talk presents a case study of how new theories of work-related stress emerged in two Finnish key medical journals after the Second World War. The talk focuses on forgotten illnesses, such as the manager’s disease, a heart condition that appeared in those who had burned their candle at both ends. In medical journals, experts presented new theories and social commentaries about the connections between societal changes and overly anxious, fatigued citizens. In this regard, novel theories about modern stress disorders generated a kind of inverted work ethic, an embodied resistance to modern society and workaholism, manifested as an incapacity to work productively.
