Abstract
”Wheeling Like an Engine – Cycling Women in 19th Century England”
The range of embodied experiences with a bicycle in the end of 19th century England were numerous, even interminable. Coasting downhills with one’s friends, enjoying moonlight rides, using tricycling as therapeutic exercising, and getting excited of, or frustrated at, the wheeled machine depending on the weather. In this talk, I shed light on the diversity of the embodied cycling experiences of women joining the bicycle boom of the 1890s. Scrutinizing these embodied experiences that include physical sensations, social meanings, mechanical knowledge, and emotions, help us to understand the reasons why women were willing to hop on the wheels and exercise with their machine.
