Webinar: The Suppression of Identities in Ukraine, Belarus and Finland

The Finnish Association for Russian and East European Studies is organising a webinar to explore the strategies employed by Russian authorities to undermine and erase religious, ethnic, linguistic, and national identities in neighbouring states across different historical periods. The webinar takes places 5 June 2025 at 16.00-18.00 (EEST).

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has brought renewed attention to the issue of national identities in Eastern Europe, particularly in light of the Kremlin’s efforts to suppress Ukrainian national identity. Concurrently, Russia has also targeted the national identity of the Belarusian people, effectively reasserting colonial influence over Belarus. Central to these campaigns is the imperial narrative promoted by the Russian president, who portrays Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians as constituents of a single people – a so-called ”triune nation.” Russia’s war in Ukraine has profoundly affected neighbouring countries, including Finland, generating regional security concerns and prompting a reassessment of ethnic, cultural, religious, and linguistic identities among various populations.
